It's important to get into the habit of preparing your bike for every ride. This way there is less chance of something going wrong. Before I head out for every ride I make sure to do my ABCs and Qs. A = Air B = Brakes C = Chain Qs = Quick Releases AIR - You should have around 90 to 100psi in your road bike tires. This is very different than mountain bikes. If you want to know for sure, check the sidewall of your tire and it will tell you the ranges. It is beneficial to have a floor pump at home as you need to put air in your tires before every single ride. It is amazing how quickly they lose air and the last thing you want is a pinched flat because you didn’t have enough air in your tires. No fun! BRAKES – you want to make sure that your brakes are not touching or rubbing on your rims. We go over how to adjust these in my Bike Maintenance Clinic. Having a brake rubbing creates more work and energy for you to pedal and we don’t want that. CHAIN – you should be cleaning and lubing your chain with oil after every 2nd or 3rd ride. A clean chain will sound and run so much nicer. Again less work and energy for you. QUICK RELEASES – these are the tabs that flip up so you can take your front and rear wheels off. You want to make sure those are firmly secure. A quick release is very serious as your wheel could essentially come off. All of these are super important to implement in your riding routine. A lot of times we are transporting our bikes in our cars or on bike racks. Things happen and next thing you know your brakes are rubbing and your quick release is flipped up. You can check it all out in my video below too. If you want to live a fit and healthy lifestyle, I invite you join my FREE community of people transforming their lives through cycling and nutrition. Avtar was his name and they were talking about climbing a pole and then jumping off, busting through fears and the like. As you can imagine I was hooked into the conversation IMMEDIATELY. For those of you who know me, know that I love a little adventure and anything that gets me out of my comfort zone. You know … EPIC. Barb mentioned that she had done this before and I flippantly said, “I’d love to do that one day. Sounds epic”. Well … ask and you shall receive. Avtar is a life coach and just happened to be shooting a video for his upcoming retreats at a high-end resort, Miraval Resort & Spa in Arizona and so the date was set. We traded business cards and Friday it was. Barb, her husband Jeff and I along with a few other people we didn’t know were doing the infamous Quantum Leap at Miraval Resort & Spa. How freakin’ cool is that! WAIT, it gets better. After this super awesome conversation went down, we went for a walk to see the sunset on the desert mountains and I asked Barb how she knew Avtar. Well they had chatted a few times and that he was a former Mr. France, Mr. Europe, Mr. World and Mr. Universe. I was like whaaaaaa? Are you serious? So onto the Google I went and sure enough Avtar has won all those titles and authored a couple books and has his own Wikipedia page. I was taken aback a bit as I had been meeting so many neat people that either knew someone I knew from home, were former bike racers, former pro athletes or had worked with celebrities like Deepak Chopra. Alas … Friday came and we arrived at Miraval Resort & Spa. The only way on the resort was through a gate. I knew about this resort as I had been working one day at Savaya Coffee and saw this woman meeting another woman in the parking lot. I couldn’t help but feel her energy and knew she was SOMEONE. Then she met another woman and what looked to be her daughter. She left with the mother so I naturally went over to the daughter as I was leaving to ask her who she was. Turns out her name is Tina Powers and is a medium who does readings privately and at Miraval and has a 6 month long waiting list. Super cool! Celebrity central. Anyway, I made it through the gates and it was absolutely stunning inside and out. Like we’re talking jaw droppingly gorgeous ... and who's kidding who, so are we ... There were 6 of us that were actually making the ‘leap’ so we all met up.
We walked over to the pole with Avtar and the camera crew and got filmed along the way. I was paired up with a lovely guy named Sam who was a new dad. As we all got closer to the Quantum Leap I thought holy shit there’s no way. Soooo have I mentioned yet that this was a partnered activity? Yes I said partnered meaning BOTH of us had to get on that platform, one at a time. Momma mia is right! We got to the pole and all sat down. We had to write down a few fears, how they hindered us and how it would feel if we conquered them. The first two ladies climbed. One got on the platform and the other didn’t. Then Jeff and Barb went and were like the power couple that they are. They didn’t say a whole lot and made it up quickly. Then there was Sam and I. Turns out that I had a fair few things to say. Two weren’t caught on video. One was profound, the other hilarious. I’ll let you decide which you think was which and they went like this … “This pole? This isn’t the kind of pole I’d like to be climbing right now.” Teehee. Yep that’s I what I meant. Not controllable in that moment. “When I get up there … “. The profoundness was that I committed. All I knew was that when it was my turn I was getting up. There was no way I was failing. Fear = failure. My fear is failing. It has taken me awhile to write about this experience as I wanted to share the video so you can really get the feel of how scared I was and I was scared to share it. It's a rather vulnerable moment. YES the pole was shaking like hell. YES I have to ask for help. YES I have to ask for EXACTLY what I want and need. YES I can do anything I want. YES I climbed that fucking pole. YES it may not have been the pole I wanted to climb but I climbed it. Hahaha! I CAN and I WILL, WATCH me. Thank you Avtar and Miraval Resort & Spa for such a magical fear busting ground-breaking experience. If I can do this … I can do anything and so can anyone else. AND so here it goes … ENJOY watching me curse a little as I figure out how the hell I’m going to get on! A lot has happened this Fall with some pretty BIG decisions. It all started in July when I made the final decision to sell everything I own (or almost) and go on an adventure with my bikes in search of sunshine, heat and me time along with meeting new people and making new business connections and running my online business from the road. The process went something like this : Step 1 - Make the BIG Decision To Move Forward Step 2 - Sell Condo Step 3 - Move Belongings Into Storage Step 4 - Buy a Van Step 5 - Get a Hitch Step 5 - Buy a Trailer Step 6 - Learn About My Trailer Step 6 - Sell My Car Step 7 - D-Day (Fuuuuuuck!) All of that happened within less than 3 months. Yeah I know! It's been one helluva journey let me tell you. Not to mention, I've never lived in a trailer let alone towed one behind a vehicle. On that note, I'm pleased to introduce you to Gold Member and Foxy Cleopatra. This is how I'm rollin' at the current moment in Arizona. If you follow me on social media then you'll have had the pleasure of meeting these two already. If not, here they are! This way of living was all new to me.
I had to learn the inner workings of it all, make mistakes the hard way and always have luck on my side through it all. I been scared out of my mind throughout the whole process all the while having a deep seeded belief in my gut that I was making the right decision even though my brain was shouting, "What the fuck are you doing Paige!" more times than I can count. The only thing I haven't mastered yet is the art of backing up a short trailer and my dripping sink tap. AND of course anything else that comes up that I've never done before. I left the day before the snow flew in Ontario scared out my wits and with the mindset that I was allowed to be scared AND do it anyway. I luckily made it across the border. Phew. I knew that whichever border guard I had had the fate of my adventure in his or her hands. I mean I have made a fair few decisions and purchases which as you can imagine had my wee knickers in a knot. If you'd like to hear about the border fiasco (yes there was a fiasco!) you get the videos on my Facebook page. My first destination was Brevard, North Carolina as the mountain biking and road riding are phenomenal there. Since then I've been through South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, New Mexico and now Arizona. I have done posts and videos on it all. The best way that I can describe my adventures to date is that I have a massive set of lady balls to do all that I've done. I have been out of my comfort zone so much and for so long and have been growing like crazy as a result. As scared as I was, I cannot imagine not having taken the leap. I'm loving life in Arizona, meeting incredible people and most importantly getting fit riding my bikes! Dreams do come true. It has been a dream of mine to work from the road and I'm doing it.
